Margaret Mahey Playground

The Margaret Mahy Playground in central Christchurch is a vibrant, imaginative space that delights children and adults alike.

Named after Margaret Mahy, the much-loved New Zealand children’s author known for classics such as The Lion in the Meadow and The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate, the playground celebrates her spirit of creativity and storytelling. Spanning an entire city block along the Ōtākaro Avon River, it’s one of the largest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere — a wonderland of colourful climbing towers, giant slides, splash zones, flying foxes, and sandpits.

Open every day and free to enjoy, it captures the joyful, imaginative heart of Christchurch and the enduring magic of play.
